A unique experience awaits visitors to Sydney Harbour National Park from next month, with iconic Fort Denison hosting a series of Australian Cheese and Wine Experiences.
Cheesemongers McIntosh and Bowmen have partnered with TE Catering, in association with NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services, to present this series of short courses, showcasing the best of Australian cheeses alongside great Australian wines and other accompaniments.
Matilda Cruises will ferry participants from Circular Quay to the harbour island landmark for the 2 hour course, where they will sample a range of boutique cheeses whilst learning about the growing Australian boutique cheese industry.
Taking place within the historic sandstone walls of Fort Denison, the course takes cheese appreciation to a new level, offering cheese and food lovers a unique introduction to the local industry. A special emphasis is placed on cheese produced on a small scale by farmers who practice sustainable and traditional cheese making techniques.
Located on the harbour, Fort Denison offers front row views of Bennelong Point, where cattle were first off loaded from the ships of the First Fleet. Originally called Cattle Point, the site is now home to the Sydney Opera House. It was from the import of these cattle the Australian cheese and dairy industry first began.
Fort Denison, part of Sydney Harbour National Park, offers a fascinating link with Sydney’s past and its stories and artefacts can be found in the main building’s museum. The carefully restored island fort features the only Martello Tower to be built in Australia, and the final one ever constructed in the British Empire.
The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service also offers a guided tour of the island and tower at various times daily. The tours can be taken before or after the Australian Cheese and Wine Experience.
The Australian Cheese and Wine Experience will run from September 2008 until the end of the year. Courses cost is $160 with a special Introductory offer of $130 for the month of September, which includes ferry to and from the island and National Park fees. The NPWS guided tour can be taken for an additional $10.
