DETAILS
Here you enter through a cobble-stoned courtyard into a world of exposed wooden beams, sandstone walls and a multi-levelled spacious incorporating five bars. The carved sandstone bar and cosy booths add to the atmosphere, as does the array of floor-to-ceiling lamps. As night falls, the atmosphere at The Argyle is smooth and relaxed with the soft lighting and sophisticated sounds setting an atmosphere of relaxed glamour. Rustic and modern decor, mouth watering cocktail and food menus and a world class entertainment line up guarantee a fabulous night out in Sydney. There is something vaguely sexy about this industrial sized, slightly dim, wine barrel of a bar located in one of Sydney’s oldest districts. There are rooms you can’t see, VIP sections sizzling with soft lights and open airy courtyards suited to casual encounters. It is true the beautifully refurbished upstairs section becomes a pumping house music venue by night and that weddings fill the galleys on certain weekends, but to simply sit down in the generous sized bar or pull up a stool in the cobblestone courtyard is equally charming at The Argyle. Drinks and conversation just seem flow in this bubbly part of town. The blend of warm wood and cold steel creates a frisson of old-meets-new and I have found is the perfect haunt for entertaining out-of-towners who want to see the sights around Circular Quay.
Both locals and tourists will enjoy the atmosphere of Sydney’s first commercial building (which you can see pictured on the twenty dollar note) – once upon a time a thriving brothel. The staff are all young and funky with plenty to say and great service skills, while the selection of German beers on tap are superbly cold and served in purpose built glassware. Soak it up with something off the menu; typical pub favourites like a club sandwich with chips or salt and pepper squid are stylishly presented and promptly delivered nice and hot. The food is made for sharing and clearly caters to the modern Australian palate. The Argyle has been thoughtfully restored, beautifully decorated and decked out with great staff.
