DETAILS
Chao Gao is reminiscent of a large Vietnamese restaurant, with its all timber fit-out, lacquered screens and decorative ceramics that speckle the earthy space. It is also very distinctly Melbourne, with the large terrace area overlooking the beautiful State Library, and a hip bar space for contemporary cocktails and quality beer. Cho Gao describes itself as an Asian beer cafe but it’s also a versatile place for functions of all sizes.

FOOD & BEVERAGE
The food is a blend of south-east Asian flavours with a diverse menu offering Asian tapas, bar snacks, main courses of curries, stir-fries and noodles, and even pizza. Dine on the likes of kumera tempura with chilli caramel for entrée or lemongrass tofu. For main course the gun powder chicken stir-fry is full of flavour, and the Mongolian garlic lamb is also a popular choice. The chilli infused chocolate spring rolls for dessert is the perfect way to conclude your meal. There’s a great beer menu on tap and by the bottle, and a small but reasonable wine selection. Try to get there early on Friday and Saturday nights; it’s often so crowded you can’t get near the bar.
